An original whale man's blubber knife from the
very famous ship
The ship was built by Hillman Bros, New Bedford, MA,
in 1841, and is the last surviving whale ship restored in like new
condition, and now display at
"MYSTIC SEAPORT, MYSTIC, CT."
The ship's voyages lasted from 3-5 years at a time,
mostly in the waters of the Pacific.
It was eventually docked in San Francisco to
shorten its long voyage from New Bedford, MA,
between 1887 and 1904.
The ship required a 30 to 36 man crew, and launched 6 man rowboats
to capture whales.
It made over 37 voyages over a period of 80 years, until it was
retired in 1921.
The knife has a nicely aged
sealed with varnish.
The handle is made of pure Ivory.
The unit is mounted on a very nice, removable, solid cherry stand,
with an engraved plaque of the ship name, builder, and dates of service.
